| 1.0 Scope: This procedure is applicable for preparation and standardization of 0.05 M bromine solution. 2.0 Apparatus: 2.1 1000 ml volumetric flask. 2.2 500 ml stoppered- iodine flask 2.3 25 ml volumetric pipette 2.4 5 ml volumetric pipette 2.5 100 ml graduated burette 3.0 Reagents: 3.1 Potassium bromate AR grade 3.2 Potassium bromide AR grade 3.3 Mercuric iodide AR grade 3.4 Hydrochloric acid AR grade 3.5 Potassium iodide solution 3.6 0.1M sodium thiosulphate 3.7 Starch solution To read this GTP click here Preparation of 1 M Sulphuric acid. 4.0 Preparation of reagents Potassium iodide solution: Dissolve 16.6 g of Potassium iodine in water, and dilute with water to 100 ml and Store in a well fitted transparent glass bottle. 5.0 Preparation: Dissolve 3.0gm of potassium bromate and 15.0gm of potassium bromide in sufficient purified water/water for injection to produce 1000 ml. 6.0 Standardization: Pipette 25.0 ml of the solution into a 500.0ml iodine flask and dilute with 120.0 ml of purified water. Add 5.0 millilitre of hydrochloric acid(HCl), insert the stopper in the flask in QC. Add 5.0 ml of potassium iodide solution, again insert the stopper and allow it to stand for 5 minutes in the dark. Titrate the liberated iodine with 0.1M sodium thiosulphate Na2S2O3) using 3.0 ml of starch solution 1%w/v, added towards the end of the titration, as indicator in QC. Each ml of 0.1M Na2S2O3 is equivalent to 0.01598 gm of Br2(Bromine). 7.0 Calculation: N1x V1 = N2xV2 N2 V2 N1 = ——— V1. Where: N1 = molarity of 0.05 M bromine soln. N2 = molarity of 0.1 M sodium thiosulphate V2 = volume of 0.1 M sodium thiosulphate in ml V1 = volume of 0.05 M bromine solution in ml. 8.0 Storage: Store in a well fitted transparent glass bottle |
