1.0 Scope: This procedure is applicable for the preparation and standardization of 0.1 M ferrous ammonium sulphate solution. 2.0 Apparatus: 2.1 1000ml and 100ml volumetric flask 2.2 250ml glass-stoppered, conical flask 2.3 25ml 20ml and 10ml volumetric pipette 2.4 100ml graduated burette 3.0 Reagents: 3.1 Ferrous ammonium sulphate AR grade 3.2 0.1M cerric ammonium sulphate solution 3.3 Sulphuric acid AR grade 3.4 1,10-Phenanthroline solution 3.5 Preparation of Reagents: 1,10-Phenanthroline solution: Dissolve 1.5 g of 1,10-phenanthroline in sufficient purified water and produce 100 ml and store in a well fitted transparent glass bottle. 4.0 Preparation: Dissolve 40 g of ferrous ammonium sulphate in a previously cooled mixture of 40 ml of sulphuric acid and 200 ml of purified water, dilute with sufficient freshly boiled and cooled purified water to produce 1000 ml. To read this SOP click here Preparation and Standardization of 0.1M Hydrochloric acid. 5.0 Standardization: Measure accurately 25.0 ml of the soln. into a flask, add 2 drops of 1,10-phenanthroline soln. and titrate with 0.1 M cerric ammonium sulphate until the red colour is changed to pale blue. Each ml of 0.1 M Cerric ammonium sulphate is equivalent to 0.03921g of Fe(NH4)2(SO4)2, 6H2O. 6.0 Calculation for molarity:- N1* = N2 V2 / V1Where: N1* = molarity of ferrous ammonium sulphate V1 = 25 ml of 0.1M ferrous ammonium sulphate N2 = molarity of 0.1M cerric ammonium sulphate V2 = volume of 0.1 M cerric ammonium sulphate in ml 7.0 Storage: Store in a well fitted transparent glass bottle. |
