Loss on Drying test (LOD) |
1.0 Apparatus: Vacuum Oven 2.0 Procedure: Weigh a dry glass-stoppered, shallow weighing bottle that has been dried under the same condition to be employed in the determination of loss on drying. Transfer to the bottle the specified sample quantity. Cover it and accurate weight the bottle & the content. Distribute sample as evenly as practicable by gentle sidewise shaking to a depth not exceeding 10 mm. Place the loaded bottle in drying chamber, remove the stopper and leave it also in the chamber at a specified temperature and time. Dry the sample to constant weight. After drying is completed, remove the bottle from the oven and stopper it. Allow it to cool to room temperature in desiccators before weighing. Weigh the bottle and content. Calculate loss on drying as follows. Calculation: % Loss on drying = Loss in weight of sample in g X 100/Weight of sample in gm |
