1.0 OBJECTIVE: 1.1 To lay down the procedure for general safety in microbiology department. 2.0 SCOPE: 2.1 This procedure is applicable for the general safety procedures and precautions while working with chemicals and microbial cultures and their spillages. 3.0 RESPONSIBILITY: 3.1 Microbiologist is responsible to follow procedure as per the procedure mentioned in this Standard operating procedure. 3.2 QC Head is responsible for implementation and compliance of the procedure as per this Standard operating procedure. 4.0 ABBREVIATIONS 4.1 SOP : Standard Operating Procedure 4.2 LAF : Laminar Air Flow 5.0 PROCEDURE: 5.1 Everyone must wear the lab garments or lab apron in the Lab. 5.2 Everyone must wear goggles, hand gloves & mask while handling chemicals / microbial cultures. 5.3 Clean the LAF bench before and after the completion of analysis. 5.4 Keep all sources of possible contamination out of your mouth –hands, pencils, laboratory ware, and other items. 5.5 During activates UV light off. 5.6 Do not drink or eat in the laboratory. 5.7 Report accidents, such as a spilled culture or a cut, to the laboratory supervisor. To Read this sop click here SOP for Cleaning Of Microbiology Lab. 5.8 Handling Of Microbiological Spillage 5.8.1 Spillage of bacterial / fungal suspensions and contaminated media shall be immediately poured with disinfectant solution and allow sufficient contact period with the disinfectant. 5.8.2 Wear hand gloves and mask and clean up the spills with paper towels. Discard the towels and media materials in to a Stainless steel wastebin. 5.8.3 All the accessories used for cleaning the microbial spillages shall be sterilized and discarded. 5.8.4 Disinfect the hands after cleaning of spillage. 5.9 HANDLING OF CHEMICAL/LIQUID/SOLID SPILLAGES 5.9.1 If there is any spillage is observed alert all the persons in the laboratory and ensure that they do step on the spillage. 5.9.2 While cleaning the spillages wear goggles, hand gloves and nose mask. 5.9.3 In case of corrosive liquids, put extinguisher meant for corrosive chemicals. 5.9.4 Solid spillages if soluble in water shall be dissolved in water and discarded. 5.9.5 Organic solvent spillages shall be cleaned by using a dry cloth. 5.9.6 For water spillage mop with dry cloth. |
